The Super Motherload team is hard at work putting the finishing touches on a playable demo of the game in preparation for it's debut to press and industry at GDC Play on March 6th. For the uninitiated, GDC is the Game Developer's Conference, held each year in San Francisco. Sadly, it's industry-only; we'd love to show it off to everyone, but a burly squadron of tough-talking security guards sporting A-team getups will stop at nothing to prevent the general public from getting their hands on it early (but seriously, they won't let you in if you're not industry). GDC Play is a new area of expo floor this year specifically for Indie Devs; we'll be at Booth #5.
Check out the brand-new
gameplay teaser for Super Motherload.

Happy Internet Blackout Day!...
Happy Internet Blackout Day!
Although, in all seriousness, SOPA and Protect-IP threaten our internet freedoms in a very real and scary way. XGenStudios wholeheartedly supports the efforts of sites like
Wikipedia,
Destructoid and
Reddit. The latter of which has a really great
summary and
video of exactly what the big deal is, so head over there and check it out.

We began to outgrow our current studio space last year, prompting us to head out on the hunt for a new spot to grow XGen's next crop of games. We found the perfect space, but the problem was that; it was empty space. With 4 walls, a floor, and too many ideas, we needed a bit of help; I hired a designer and a construction crew and we got to work. It took a designer capable of bringing to fruition our lofty dreams on a not-so-lofty budget, and a construction crew with enough patience to build the unconventional. Taylor designed custom pixel-art wallpaper for the lobby and an original damask (complete with hidden XGen characters) for the secret room. The "barn-board" for the walls was located and reclaimed from a mill West of the city, and custom "XGen Blue" paint shipped up from the states. More substantial magnetic whiteboard arrived to replace our shower-board solution, and books were collected from second-hand stores to build bookshelves... out of books. We've got living moss on one wall and a bear, a gift from a construction worker, on another.
After a year of planning, designing, revising & building, we moved in this April. While the pool table isn't quite levelled yet, and the blinds are in transit, we couldn't wait any longer to share the first few pictures.
We'll be sharing more photos in the months to come as we complete the finishing touches; I hope you enjoy the first few pictures of our new digs.

Super Motherload Update: Introducing Outposts
With a larger underground area to explore, returning to the surface in Super Motherload isn't always practical.
Introducing Outposts; these subterranean facilities allow for underground pit stops, allowing you to refuel, repair, sell minerals and upgrade your pod deep under the surface of Mars.
Each outposts is also equipped with a teleporter. Once activated, outpost teleporters allow you to travel deeper underground following a return to shallower depths or the surface itself.

Super Motherload website for more.

Update: The Mac OS X version of Defend Your Castle
is now free.
On the iPad version -
We've given input devices for the game a lot of thought. Ages ago, we had early discussions with a local company about bringing the game to public touch-screen kiosks, and I've had quite a few people tell me how fun the web-based version is to play on the smartboards they have installed in some schools here in Edmonton.
Tablets may be the present-day consumer-level device best suited to Defend Your Castle. When hardware became available and we started experimenting with porting the game to a larger touchscreen, it became apparent how fun it was going to be.
A larger touchscreen allows you to coordinate all ten fingers in repelling invaders, all while playing co-op multiplayer. Using all of your digits takes makes the game feel more engaging, something like playing classical guitar - and, to me at least, that's really satisfying.
Ultimately, it feels wrong to have the iPad version in the hands of so few. We're can't guarantee it will be free forever, but if you do really dig the HD version, you can support us by picking the game up for another platform like
iPhone/iPod Touch,
MacOS,
WiiWare or, soon enough, Windows.
Get Defend Your Castle HD.
